MANUAL THERAPY

Hands-On Healing Manual Therapy

What is Manual Therapy?

Manual therapy is the practice of the art and science of skilled manipulation by a qualified therapist, of virtually every tissue and organ system of the body. Manual manipulation of the soft tissues (the muscles and fascial connective tissues) allows us to positively and profoundly influence the entire body.

While such manipulation directly effects the fascia, it is also effecting nerve ending structures within the muscles, tendons, and ligaments, the position of and tension upon boney structures (joints), the circulatory and lymphatic systems, the endocrine and hormonal system, and the peripheral, central and autonomic nervous systems. Manual therapy is a powerful facilitator of healing, creating enhanced efficacy of all treatments.

Why is it Essential in Healing Practice?

The fascial connective tissues spread throughout the entire body, from head to foot, in a three dimensional web without interruption. They surround and suspend every muscle, bone, nerve, blood vessel and organ of the body, down to the cellular level. For this reason, dysfunction of the fascial system due to trauma, positional influences, or inflammatory processes, can create restrictions within this system, resulting in abnormal pressure/tension on nerves, muscles, bones or organs. This can result in pain and malfunction throughout the entire body, sometimes with bizarre side-effects and seemingly unrelated symptoms.

My clinical experience has shown that a high percentage of people suffering with pain and loss of functional mobility are experiencing symptoms of dysfunction within the fascial system which have not been diagnosed. Many of the standard medical tests, such as X-rays, CAT scans, electromyography, and the like, do not adequately illustrate all of the tissues of this system. Skilled physical therapy evaluation and palpation are able to reveal many otherwise undisclosed areas requiring therapeutic intervention.

Hands-On Healing's Unique Approach

Traditional physical therapy emphasizes a multi-modality approach to treatment, frequently utilizing many machines with care often administered by support or unlicensed personnel. In contrast, my approach emphasizes hands-on integrated therapies performed with the skill and medical knowledge gained throughout my professional education and years of practice. In addition, the philosophy of my approach to care recognizes that the deleterious effects of psychological and emotional stress upon the system may be equal to and indistinguishable from physical stresses experienced by the individual.
